Year 11 Standard English Amazing Race

How do you engage students in the often-obscure language of poetry? Challenge your students to a competitive race to the finish! Year 11 Standard English teachers collaborated to devise an Amazing Race style lesson to deliver poetry techniques to their students in an engaging and challenging way.

Aaron E writes: On Thursday morning, the 27th July, our Standard English teachers decided to better enhance Year 11’s knowledge on poetry, so they organised a mini Amazing Race! Students were randomly scattered into different groups with other students and were set to complete the race using their own intellect. Student groups were challenged with different hints to make their way around the school and find the different checkpoints. At each checkpoint, teachers were waiting with quotes that had poetic techniques within them. Each time a group got the technique correct they would move on to the next checkpoint to receive the next clue. The race ended with everyone receiving points against their name depending on where they came in the race. Overall, It was an enjoyable and entertaining race that got us all thinking while under pressure from other groups overtaking the lead. Looking forward to Round 2!
