Year 10 STEM project shines at UTS

On Friday 23rd February, we were fortunate not only to be invited to attend the launch of the University of Technology Sydney’s STEM Symposium, but also to present some of our ideas and projects from our work here at Gymea.

With our small group of our Year 10 students trialling an Extension Projectile Motion project this term, it was a fantastic opportunity for them to really showcase what they had learnt and produced while their teachers gained some valuable ideas for future learning.

Their project drew together the concepts of quadratic functions and motion that they have been studying in both Maths and Science this term. The students were asked to use freely available apps, iNalyse and Desmos.com, to track the motion of several objects moving in projectile motion and discover the link to their mathematical work.

This project went far further than their Teachers expected, with the students comfortably talking about concepts many don’t study unless they undertake Extension 1 Mathematics in the senior school. They seamlessly utilised their existing Mathematical knowledge to discover properties such as heights and lengths of motion, even questioning and problem solving a number of their calculations that seemed too high.

Our five STEM-students; Rhys, Liam, Luke, Ellen and Reanna, did us proud and absolutely stole the spotlight. They set up a stall in amongst many other schools answering questions and talking through their project and findings with many University lecturers and business and Government officials. They were not only the busiest stall amazing many who spoke to them, but were also chosen to be filmed as part of the University’s media launch on the event.

Congratulations to our star researchers, not only for your work on Friday, but also for the amazing and authentic learning you produced through your project work. An outstanding result!
