New Department Attendance Procedures

The New South Wales Department of Education and Communities has released a revised policy of attendance procedures for all students in NSW public schools. These procedures bring all states in Australia in line with similar procedures and expectations with regard to student attendance.

Two areas in the policy that we need to highlight are:

  • Parents are required to explain the absence of their children from school promptly and within seven school days to the school. An explanation for absence must be provided to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence.
  • Exemption from school can no longer be granted for students travelling for reasons such as the purpose of a family holiday, family business, bereavement or other reasons during school terms.
