NAIDOC Celebration Assembly

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. On Thursday 27 June our school community came together for a special NAIDOC assembly. The theme of NAIDOC Week for 2019 is: Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.

We were fortunate to have different guest speakers who made this a very special celebration. Our guest speakers and performers inlcuded:

  • Aunty Deanna Schreiber: Community elder who gave the Welcome to Country, and shared with us a very moving speech about NAIDOC’s theme for 2019: Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.
  • Sandra Blackburn: our Aboriginal  Education Officer, shared with us her personal experiences growing up and the collaborative development of our school’s Acknowledgement of Country by students Caitlin Clancy, Holly Parfitt, Tahlia McAlister and Sandra.
  • Michael Lloyd: one of our Visual Arts teachers, shared with us his personal high school experiences and presented the school with a stunning artwork that he created for this special occasion.
  • Bruce Shillingsworth: former student who shared with us personal stories about growing up and the importance of protecting our environment and our waterways.
  • Bruce Shillingsworth Junior: former student who not only performed the Smoking Ceremony but also gave an outstanding performance on the didgeridoo.
  • Caitlin Clancy: Our Vice Captain, who gave a student’s perspective on the significance of NAIDOC celebrations.
  • Our Year 9 vocal group: Maise Baker, Natasha Brabant, Laura Cox, Maya Simmons sang the National Anthem in Dharawal.

A huge thank our special guests for making this such a  special and memorable celebration. And to our students who were a respectful and attentive audience.
