Gymea helps the Sharks stamp out Bullying

On Tuesday 20 June we were fortunate enough to welcome some special visitors to our school, Brett Murray and some Cronulla Sharks players. The Make Bullying History Foundation was established by Brett and his wife to empower students, parents and teachers around Australia. This year, after forming a partnership with the Sharks, they have been very busy visiting schools to try and eradicate bullying.

Brett and the Sharks players presented to our students on anti-bullying, an initiative close to their hearts, sharing personal experiences to help students gain a deeper understanding of the negative affects of bullying, and how each one of us can make a difference in overcoming and stamping out these behaviours. Brett’s presentation looked at the contributing factors of bullying behaviours, with a focus on understanding self-worth and goal setting, positive reinforcement of each individuals uniqueness and tools to help students combat bullying culture.

The presentations, speakers and activities were extremely well received by our students and their messages were very clear: everyone counts and everyone should be treated with dignity and respect.  As a follow up to the program, students are encouraged to access a free interactive  app designed for parents and adults that allows them to problem solve bullying scenarios in a game format.

Thank you to Brett Murray and the players for taking time out of their busy training schedules to proudly present to our students, and to Mr Fallah, for organising this meaningful community initiative for our year 7 and 8 students.
