Great Opportunities in Music

Congratulations to our school band, Dr Hastie and to our band tutor Mrs Jones who guided the kids in the annual Bandfest at the Kogarah St George Bank auditorium in Week 9. The band received a very positive adjudication and was awarded a “Gold Award”.  The event recognises the musical outcome and achievement of each group at their level.  This was a great achievement and recognition for our school band and something that the school community will enjoy seeing and hearing.

Music attracts such a diverse range of talents and styles and our kids are enjoying the support to develop their interest along with numerous opportunities to perform. The support by tutors and our music teacher are key to the success of our students as they move from year 7 through to year 12.

Recently a number of students from Years 8 and 9 participated in a piano workshop to be held in the school hall.  This workshop was led by a former student of the school, Anita Beuthien, who is a professional musician specialising in piano and violin, having spent 20 years as a violinist with the Sydney Symphony and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestras, as well as being an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board. The work shop provided our kids with valuable and expert advice with their musical talent. While Anita was very good with feedback and supporting these kids, it does take some courage for them to perform in such an audience. What an opportunity for these kids.

On Saturday 27 May members of our band and vocal programs performed items for the Oyster Bay Art and Craft Festival, which has been held annually since 1970. The day was a perfect day for the fair and drew good crowds to enjoy the performance by our students. Our stage band looked and played very well and the assortment of vocal groups entertained the crowds while demonstrating the opportunities our kids are given here in Music.

Congratulations to Dr Hastie for his commitment to our music programs at Gymea.
