Dance, Dance, Dance

At Gymea Technology High School we are offered many opportunities to participate in Dance. These opportunities allow students to develop an understanding of Dance in general and to develop themselves individually as dancers.

In Year 7, all students participate in dance as part of their curriculum. They study different styles and learn some choreography to explore movement. Cobi -“I really enjoyed the experience I had in Year 7 Dance. It was heaps of fun, I learnt a lot and it was a great way to meet new people.”

Choosing Dance as an elective in Years 9- 12 is a great opportunity for more serious dancers to develop their skills and explore the world of Dance with deeper meaning. Cobi and  Zoe –“So far, this year we have focused on our own strengths and weaknesses and how to improve on them. We have learnt about our body composition and how to remain safe when dancing.”Zoe – “This year I was lucky enough to be chosen to dance Madeleine’s HSC composition, which I’m really excited to be doing.”

All students at Gymea are given the chance to audition for one of our school dance companies. The companies include Junior Company (Years 7 and 8), Intermediate Company (Years 9 and 10), and Senior Company (currently Years 9, 11 and 12). The Junior and Intermediate Companies rehearse during sport time and the Senior Company rehearses after school on a Tuesday afternoon. Cobi and Zoe – “Currently in Intermediate Company we are working on a lyrical routine, called I’m In Here. We are auditioning for Sydney Regional Festival in a couple of weeks.” Zoe- “In Senior Company this year we are doing an amazing contemporary piece called Venom. We also have a very tiring warm up routine which strengthens and stretches our bodies.”

Through our school’s dance companies, we have many chances to perform, such as, Sydney Regional Dance Festival, State Dance Festival, School Spectacular, Formal Assemblies, Open Night, School concerts and more. The Sydney Region and State Festival are held annually and give students from public schools a chance to perform to a wider audience. Formal assemblies, Open Night and School Concerts are all held at school and are a lot of fun because we get to perform in front of our peers to showcase what we have been working on throughout the year. The Schools Spectacular is a very enjoyable experience because you perform for thousands of people alongside 2000 other performers from all over the state. Cobi & Zoe – “We have both performed at Regional Festival and definitely enjoyed the experience.  Dance concerts are always so much fun as we get to perform with some of our closest friends.” Zoe – “The Schools Spectacular is such an amazing experience as you are able to perform with so many different people and make some really good friends.”

Overall, at Gymea we have an amazing Dance program that offers many styles and caters for all students from Years 7 -12.
