It was wonderful to see our students celebrating NAIDOC week 2020 last week through a range of activities across the school. This years theme “Always Was, Always Will Be” sees teachers, students and the broader community explore, learn about, and appreciate the wealth and breadth of Indigenous Nations, languages and knowledges of this continent.

Our HSIE faculty delivered lessons focused on exploring indigenous history, with students learning about the many countries, languages, stories and beliefs that make up our indigenous culture. Thank you to our Aboriginal Education Officer, Mrs Sandra Blackburn who helped out in these lessons, working with our students to deepen their understanding of our first nations people.

In PDHPE, Ms Turnbull led our Year 7 and 8 students through a traditional Indigenous ball game originating from the north-west central districts of Queensland, called Keentan. Because the action of the players jumping up to catch the ball resembled the movements of a kangaroo the Kalkadoon people sometimes described this game as the ‘kangaroo-play’. The ball itself was made of a piece of opossum, wallaby or kangaroo hide tied up with twine.

In Visual Arts, Mr Lloyd also led our Year 7 and 8 students along with some of our Year 9 and 10 art elective students through a range of traditional art making methods with materials he had collected from around our local community. These activities are continuing into this week as well.

We are proud to celebrate the strong connection with our Aboriginal students and many staff members who honour their Aboriginal heritage, together with all students and staff at Gymea.
