The Women in Engineering and IT (WiE&IT) Program at University of Technology Sydney is a long-standing initiative that is held twice a year for female secondary students all over NSW to redress the low rate of female participation by communicating the opportunities of engineering and ICT careers as a course of study.
There were almost 200 students from a total of 30 schools in attendance for this event on 5th April 2013. Three of our Year 11 students; Jenny, Cassandra and Clarissa spent a day at UTS going through some great exploratory and hands-on programs organised to inspire interest and curiosity in engineering and IT. The girls spoke to new and continuing students and also honourable staff from UTS regarding opportunities and information such as coursework, internships, scholarships, overseas work experience etc. They also took part in various workshops and tasks such as Remote Labs, Engineering; What is that?, Mouse Car Racing, Strands of Engineering etc. All these activities were exclusively designed by students of UTS for secondary students and were very engaging and informative.
