On Thursday 27th November and Friday 28th November a number of year 9 students undertook a training program to enable them to become peer support leaders for the incoming Year 7 for 2015.
The peer support program has remained a highly successful program at Gymea and continues to be evaluated and improved to reflect the changing demands of our students. Research shows that young people approach their peers initially when seeking assistance, reassurance or guidance. Strengthening and up skilling these social supports help ensure a positive transition into high school as the peer support activities undertaken by the year 7 students next year will help provide that guidance in ensuring our kids look after each other.
Our peers support leaders participated in activities for the two days that focussed on empathy, problem solving, group management and communication. Our students were congratulated for their enthusiasm, interest, involvement and overall passion and will prove to be excellent examples and leaders for next year.
Congratulations to all who were involved in the training. Thank you to Ms Mitchell for her organisation and to Ms Osborne and Mr Fallah for their training of the year 9 students.
