Last Friday Year 10 Forensic Archaeology conducted a Mock Trial. Walter Sickert, an artist who painted ‘Ripper’ scenes was accused of being ‘Jack the Ripper.’ Students prepared for three weeks by carrying out group work, research and they even visited Sutherland local courts. All students actively participated in the trial by taking on the roles of costumers, historical consultants, legal consultants, barristers and witnesses.
The students performed admirably with the defence achieving a verdict of ‘not guilty’ as there was ‘reasonable doubt’ as to the guilt of Walter Sickert, however, the prosecution team won the trial based on their examination-in-chief examination and cross examination.
My thanks must go to the students and to Mrs Fallah, who was our magistrate and to Mrs Smith and Mrs Polianitis who assisted in the coaching of the students.
