This policy provides information for the community and direction for school staff on the entitlement, requirements and procedures for enrolment of students at Gymea Technology High School. This policy should be read in conjunction with the Department of Education and Training policy, “Enrolment of Students in Government Schools: A Summary and Consolidation of Policy” (August 1997) – which is available on the DET website.
This policy is for enrolment in the school’s academic program and does not apply to acceptance into the accelerated technology program at the school.
General Procedure
As per DET policy, a student is entitled to enrol in the school if their permanent address is within the residential drawing area as designated by the Department of Education and Training for this school, and they qualify for an academic year given the Board of Studies requirements. However, the Principal has the right to refuse enrolment, and refer to Sydney Regional Office, any student with a past history of violence or placing others in a dangerous position, or where their placement would appear to be non-advantageous to the student or the school community. Where the student’s residential address is outside ‘local area’, the criteria below shall be applied to determine the appropriateness of the enrolment.
When enrolment is sort from another secondary school a questionnaire will be sent to that school seeking advice in writing pertaining to the student. An enrolment interview will occur once that questionnaire is returned or a reasonable attempt has been made to obtain its return. Families will be informed of this procedure on application to enrol and will be asked to provide copies of the student’s most recent school reports.
All enrolments are contingent on a satisfactory risk assessment being available for the student.
Criteria for Non-local Enrolment Applications
The criteria to determine non-local enrolments will be as follows – this does not apply to acceptance into the accelerated technology program:
(NB: criteria are not listed in priority order)
Final determination of non-local enrolments will be determined by the Principal except where a waiting list is to be informed. In this circumstance, a panel consisting the Principal, a staff representative and a parent representative shall determine priorities and placements. |
