Cultural Exchange

Cultural exchange offers our students and our visitors the unique chance to learn about a new culture first hand. It’s something that our students at Gymea so willingly take part in whenever the chance arises. They regularly offer to help out in many ways, whether it be to take our visitors on a tour of the school, or an excursion to see the sights of Sydney, or to buddy up with them and show them their classes and study patterns.

On the 15th of August, 20 students and two chaperone teachers from Jakarta, Indonesian arrived for a five week tour of our school. The Indonesian students were buddied up with eleven of our Year 11 students, Josh, Edward, Jack, Liam, Henry, Samara, Mikayla, Ellie, Reanne, Amber and Emily, who ensured that they felt at home right away. They were then integrated into in many different classes around the school and have enjoyed meeting lots of our students and teachers.

During their five weeks with us, the Indonesian students and their teachers have also been involved in a wide range of excursions that have allowed them to experience all that Sydney and our local area has to offer. Our Year 11 students have accompanied them on seven different trips so far, with one more excursion on offer next week. They have toured the Opera House and Maritime Museum including climbing through a Navy submarine, experienced the thrills of Luna Park and the dizzying heights of Scenic World at the Blue Mountains, explored Sydney Aquarium, Wildlife Zoo, Madam Tussauds and Taronga Zoo, taken a cruise up the Port Hacking River from Cronulla and discovered all that the University of Wollongong has to offer students.

Our staff and students have, as always, offered a helping hand wherever they can and have warmly embraced our visitors. As our Year 11 students head into their yearly exams next week, 8 fantastic Year 10 students have offered to help out for the remainder of the trip to ensure that our visitors continue to have a happy and welcoming experience at Gymea. We wish them well on their final week of their tour with us.
