Our athletics carnival is a highlight to the year, offering a great opportunity for all to show their school pride as students positively engage with sport. Our athletics carnival was held on Wednesday 23rd March at the Barden Ridge Athletics Track. It certainly was a big day and kept us all very busy from start to finish. The weather brightened up for us and though it did get very warm, it was a fantastic way to bring the school community together, cheering the students on as they participated competitively in the various track and field events. It was fantastic to see so many parents in attendance supporting our students.
The carnival was organised as a tabloid event with the individual age groups travelling around to the events as a group, allowing everyone to participate and cheer their friends on. Throughout the day all of the events ran smoothly with students competing to the best of their ability. Everyone had a most enjoyable day.
A highlight to the day was the house chants, led by senior students. This also added to the positive atmosphere of the day. This time all the four houses showed even greater enthusiasm and gusto than at the swimming carnival earlier this term. It was difficult to judge the house chant winner, but this time it was Holt that came through.
Our overall champion house could not be determined until the next day when all results could be finalised. Congratulations to Birnie, our overall winner, followed by Holt, then Connell then Greaves.
All students did very well and our 2016 Athletics age champions are:
12 years – Chet French and Aman Kuai
13 years – Noah Daikin and Jorja Paardekooper
14 years – Marcus Apostalakis and Georgia Brownhill
15 yrs – Jake Sidney and Caitlin Clancy
16 yrs – Tyler Towns and Bridget Fallah
17 yrs – Liam Shearsby and Samara Brownhill
We look forward to seeing how our zone team go as they move to the zone and regional carnivals and beyond.
A special mention to the team of year 12 students did a fantastic job running a stall selling cupcakes, sausage sandwiches and egg and bacon rolls to raise funds for school sporting programs. These were an absolute hit, as was their wonderful service. Of course the stall proved to be very popular for our hungry staff and students. Thank you to the students and staff who helped run this stall throughout the day.
Many thanks to Ms Di Maio and Mrs Noble, for their hard work in organising a fantastic event and to all the students and staff who made our athletics carnival such a success.
